Business overview

Select commenced operations in Malawi in late 2009 with first disbursements occurring in February 2011. In August 2010, Select Malawi entered into a long-term debt financing agreement with the Soros Economic Development Fund, who were keen to support a housing-focused lending business in this economically disadvantaged country. This funding was converted into local currency using a back-to-back facility with FMB Malawi.

As most Government Ministries in Malawi are headquartered in Lilongwe, Select chose to establish its head office in Lilongwe. Select also has 2 other regional hubs in Blantyre and Mzuzu as well as 27 satellite offices scattered around the country.

Select Financial Services has grown to one of the dominant micro lenders in the Malawi financial services market and is the only MFI focusing on housing microfinance in Malawi

In the face of the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Freddie in Malawi, there are many stories of hope and compassion emerging. One such example is the partnership between Select Financial Services and the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS), who have joined forces to provide essential relief to those in need. The southern region of Malawi, particularly Blantyre, was hit hardest by the cyclone, as the incessant rains triggered catastrophic flash floods. The entire nation’s power grid was severely damaged, leaving many communities without access to electricity. In addition, the hydroelectric dam was rendered inoperable, causing further disruption and damage. In response to this crisis, Select Financial Services and the MRCS have stepped up to provide much-needed assistance to those impacted by the cyclone. Through their partnership, they are working tirelessly to deliver vital aid and support to affected communities, including shelter, food, water, and medical assistance. Their efforts have brought hope and comfort to many who are struggling in the aftermath of this disaster. By coming together and pooling their resources, Select Financial Services and the MRCS are demonstrating the power of philanthropy and community spirit in times of crisis. Their partnership serves as a reminder that we all have a responsibility to help those in need, especially in times of crisis. It is heartening to see businesses like Select Financial Services stepping up to make a difference and contribute to the well-being of their communities. Let us all follow their lead and do our part to support those affected by this devastating event.
